I grew up in the UK from the age of six. Like a lot of students thinking about medicine for the first time, I remember how overwhelming the whole process felt. There were endless acronyms, conflicting advice online, and a constant feeling that everyone else somehow understood the system better than I did.

What I eventually realised is that applying to medical school is not actually as complicated as it first seems, once somebody explains it properly, in plain English, step by step. That is exactly what this guide is designed to do. I applied to four medical schools. I got interviews at all four and eventually firmed King's College London, where I am now a 4th year medical student. This guide contains everything I know, including the things I wish someone had told me earlier.

Chapter 1 - What Is UK Medicine, Actually?

What Is UK Medicine, Actually?

Before thinking about how to get into medical school, it is worth making sure you understand what you are actually applying for. A lot of students apply because it is what their family expects, or because they have always assumed it is what they want to do, without really understanding what medical school involves day-to-day, or what life as a doctor actually looks like. This chapter covers the basics.

Unlike in the United States, where you complete a four-year undergraduate degree first and then apply to medical school, in the UK you apply directly from school at age 17 or 18. If you get in, you spend five years at medical school and graduate as a qualified doctor. You do not need any degree before starting.

From Aadi

My decision to pursue medicine came from a combination of things: a genuine love of biology and how the human body works, a personal family health experience that made the reality of medicine feel very close, and work experience that confirmed it all. When I started shadowing doctors and volunteering in healthcare settings, I found that even the difficult parts drew me in rather than put me off. That, more than anything, told me I was in the right place.
